Castor oil is obtained from the fruit seed of castor (Ricinus communis L.) a large shrub that grows mainly in India, Brazil and China. The seed has an oil content of 40-50%.
The quality manly used is first pressed, known as fist special grade (FSG), it is a light-colored liquid, yellowish, with a characteristic odour and high viscosity. It is the only oil containing fatty acid ricinoleic characterized by the presence of an OH group (more than 80%) which gives rise to the properties that make castor an exclusive oil.
Moreover the high reactivity of the OH group (hydroxyl) leads to a high range of products such as dehydrated castor oil, hydrogenated castor oil, 12-hydroxystearic acid, sebacic acid, ricinoleic acid… This is an oil wit flexibility and ductility for the manufacturer of industrial resins, plastics, elastomers, dielectric, rubber products in general.
